With the proliferation of text book readers, digital downloads....etc., many pundits and have predicted the disappearance of the printed book, and its replacement by libraries full of virtual bookshelves replete with e-books and other resources in digital format. While the cultural history of libraries has accommodated emerging currents of experimental scholarship with a strong networked culture, the library has not sacrificed its print book culture for a purely virtual one

This paper will examine "The Library Beyond the Book," a thought-provoking publication that debates the merits and demerits of the past, present, and future of the transformation of the historical library--from palimpsest, scriptorium, repository, to hybrid place-- in the process of knowledge acquisition. Will the printed book vanish or survive in the current virtual blend?
