Kuali OLE: Enabling Choices for Libraries

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

While there are multiple cloud-hosted next generation library systems in the marketplace, few allow implementation outside of a closed proprietary cloud environment. Portability of the software in moving from one vendor-hosted cloud environment to another is a key factor in controlling costs and enabling long-term flexibility for your library. These issues, together with a desire to enable libraries to retain their intellectual property, have been instrumental in driving the development of the community-source ILS Kuali Open Library Environment (OLE). Since the OLE software is open, each library owns the software, and can make the decisions about how to implement, from workflows to selecting a discovery layer to the best fit for hosting the software, including the option to outsource the hosting to a variety of certified Kuali vendors. Kuali OLE was implemented in July of this year at Lehigh University and at the University of Chicago. It will soon be implemented at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London; and future implementers include Indiana University and the University of Pennsylvania. This thirty-minute innovation talk will discuss these implementations in terms of how they demonstrate the flexibility of OLE and the varying choices made by OLE partner institutions, and will provide an overview of planned enhancements to the OLE software.
